Saints Improve to 7-3 with Season Sweep of Cardinals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's volleyball team swept the season series with Concordia (Mich.) with a 3-1 win on Tuesday night. Aubrey Bates led the Saints on both sides of the ball. She dished 45 assists and 15 digs for a double-double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Cardinals used multiple runs to build a lead and earn the 25-17 victory in the first set to take an early 1-0 lead in the set score.

The Saints responded in the second, using a 4-0 run to gain a 14-12 advantage and two 3-0 runs to build the lead to 21-14. Concordia (Mich.) cut the lead to five points, but Siena Heights won the set, 25-19, to tie the score at one.

SHU scored the first three points of the third before the Cardinals used a 4-0 run to take the lead. The Saint knotted things up at four before building a 9-6 lead with a 4-0 run. With the score at 12-8, Siena used a 5-0 run to increase the advantage to 17-8 before developing a double-digit edge. The Saints scored 13 of the final 15 points in the set for the 25-10 win and a 2-1 lead. 

The score remained close throughout most of the set including a 17-17 tie late. Victoria Nerkowski broke the tie with a kill that sparked three-straight points and forced a Cardinal timeout. Bates recorded a kill out of the break for the 21-17 edge. CUAA scored a point to cut the SHU lead to 21-18, but two straight points by the Saints forced Concordia (Mich.) to take its second timeout. Bates and Samantha Getson ended the match with back-to-back kills for the set and match point. 

TOP SAINTS

• Bates finished the match with a hitting percentage of .438. She also added eight kills to her stats on the evening. 

Aline Marinelo led the team with 14 kills (.303). She contributed five digs and one assist.

Katelyn Ferris and Getson each had 10 kills. Ferris also finished with three blocks while Getson had five. 

Janel Ruhlman recorded 15 digs and seven kills.

Sam Huddleston also had double-digit digs with 10.

THE OPPOSITION

• Kayla Peters had a double-double with 12 points and 12 digs.

• Tara Schatzle led defensively with 23 digs.
