ATLANTA – Siena Heights junior forward Peyton Banks was named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-America honorable mention when the organization announced the honorees on Monday, March 22.
Banks finished a fantastic junior campaign with several accolades. The first came when she became just the 12th Siena Heights women's basketball player to hit the 1,000 career-points milestone. She followed that performance with a second-consecutive Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Player of the Year award as well as a First-Team All-WHAC selection. The Wadsworth, Ohio native also led all National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) women's basketball players in free throw percentage (.931) while also falling 19th in 3-point field-goal percentage (.442).
"Peyton has been an integral part of our team since her freshman year," said SHU women's basketball head coach Sue Syljebeck. "Her ability to play any position on the floor is a big reason why she is named amongst the best players in the NAIA."
This is the first in Banks' career that she has made the WBCA All-America honorable mention list. She is just the fifth Saint to achieve this prestigious honor (Nicole Coffey, Laura Panozzo, Grace Howrigon, and Sierra Calhoun were the other four).
The WBCA presents the Player of the Year award annually to the top player in five of the six WBCA membership divisions (NCAA Divisions II, and III, NAIA, two-year college and high school). The Player of the Year and the 10-member Coaches' All-America team in each division are selected by a committee of WBCA member coaches in that division. The Wade Trophy is presented to the best player in NCAA Division I.
