The Siena Heights Softball Team swept Cleary by scores of 15-7 and 14-12 in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. During the course of the second game, Taylor Hayes broke the SHU career record for both doubles and homeruns.
In game one, the Saints put up 14 runs in the first three innings before Cleary answered with seven runs of their own. In the bottom of the 6th, a single run incorporated the run rule and the game ended.
SHU scored three in the first, five in the second, and six in the third to build a comfortable lead. For the game, Mariah Boss was 2-2 with two runs scored, a double and a RBI. Kelsie Abbott had a 3-3 game with three runs scored, two doubles and six RBI. Taylor Hayes was 2-2 with three runs, three RBI and one homerun, which was the record tying 20th homerun. Megan Jones had a 2-5 game with one RBI while Bitty Treece, 2-3, Taylor Heisler, 2-3 with two runs and a double, and Kyndle Wolfinger, 1-2 with three runs scored also provided offense for the Saints. Julie Bonk and Kelsey Cherry each notched their first collegiate hit in the game as well.
Abbott earned the win on the mound, her 16th, tying her for the 4th best single season mark in SHU history, with five innings pitched. Morgan Warfield threw one inning in relief.
Game two was a wild affair with Cleary taking a 2-0 lead in the first followed by 10 runs in the first and second from SHU. Cleary came back with four runs in the third, followed by three SHU runs in the third and four runs by Cleary in the fourth. A single run by SHU in the 5th put the score at 14-10 before Cleary tacked on two more runs in the 6th for the 14-12 ending score.
Hayes highlighted this game, setting two SHU career records in the process. In the bottom of the third, Hayes blasted her 2nd homerun of the day, and her 21st homerun of her career, a solo shot leading off the inning to break the former career mark of 20. In the bottom of the 5th, Hayes led off the inning with a double which gives her 12 doubles on the season, and 45 now for her career, breaking the old mark of 44.
Boss was 1-2 with two runs, Kenya Keller knocked a two run homerun in the bottom of the first, Hayes ended the day 3-3 with two runs, a double, a homerun, and two RBI, Jones had a 1-3 game with one run and two RBI. Warfield was 4-4 with three runs, two RBI and a double. Skylar Crenshaw had a 2-4 game with a double, a run scored and two RBI, Hannah Bleikamp added a 2-4 game with two runs, two RBI, and a double. Cherry was 2-3 and Wolfinger was 3-4 with a triple and a run scored.
Warfield was the starting pitcher, throwing three plus innings. Stephanie Tylicki came on in relief in the top of the fourth, throwing four innings, allowing two runs on five hits and earning the win.
With the wins, the Saints move to 21-18 on the season. They will return to action when they wrap up their regular season with a doubleheader at home against St. Francis (Ill.) on Sunday at 1 pm.
