ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights softball team swept Concordia, 8-7 and 5-4, in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader on Thursday.
The twinbill ended on a pinch-hit, walk-off single by Bitty Treece, which broke a 4-all tie before darkness set in.
Morgan Warfield was the winning pitcher in the nightcap. She also scored two runs on offense.
Of the four runs scored against Warfield, only two were earned. She gave up six hits while compiling one strikeout and two walks.
SHU pushed its first four runs across with a lot of help from the Concordia defense. The Saints scored two runs on one Cardinal error in the second inning, taking a 2-0 lead.
Siena Heights built a 4-1 advantage in the fourth, scoring on another error and then on a wild pitch.
The Cards eventually tied the contest at 4-all in the six, setting the stage for Treece's two-out RBI single that ended the game in the seventh.
Angela Martin finished 3-for-4 for CUAA. Dana Ford had a two-run double. Samantha Capuzzi also doubled while Amy Trionfi tripled.
Corrina Rotondo was the losing pitcher.
In game one, SHU used a seven-run second inning to take the lead and held off Concordia in the end.
Taylor Heisler batted 3-for-3 with a double, run and two RBI. Skylar Crenshaw added a 2-for-2 game with one RBI while Taylor Hayes drove in two runs.
After falling behind 1-0, SHU erupted for seven in the second. Heisler and Hayes had two-run singles, Kelsie Abbott drew a bases-loaded walk and Crenshaw hit an RBI single. The Saints also scored a run on an illegal pitch.
Kenya Keller had an RBI single in the third, pushing the Saints' advantage to 8-3 at the time.
CUAA answered with one run in the fourth and then three runs in the sixth to trim its deficit to 8-7.
Abbott was the winning pitcher. Of the seven runs scored against her, only two were earned. She gave up 10 hits and recorded four strikeouts.
Lindsey Pyle batted 3-for-4 with two doubles and one run. Cheyenne Brierley finished 2-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases and one RBI. Ford and Capuzzi had doubles. Brierley was the losing pitcher.
With the wins, SHU (19-18, 7-11) finished its WHAC schedule and will wait out other results around the conference this weekend. Currently, Lourdes (Ohio) had a 6-8 record while Aquinas is 5-9 and Cornerstone is 4-10; SHU needs to finish ahead of at least one of those schools to qualify for the WHAC Tournament.
The Saints will compete in two non-conference doubleheaders this weekend. They are set to host Cleary on Saturday and Saint Francis (Ill.) on Sunday.
