Softball Ends Regular Season with Losses to #9 Saint Xavier

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights softball team dropped a pair of non-conference contests to ninth-ranked Saint Xavier (Ill.) on Saturday at Christensen Memorial Field.

Liz Polmanteer batted 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one for the Saints. Katie O'Hotzke was the losing pitcher, allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits while recording three strikeouts and one walk.

The Saints led twice -- 1-0 and 2-1 -- but could not hold on to either advantage. Mariah Boss scored on an error in the first inning and then Polmanteer smacked an RBI single in the second.

Saint Xavier pulled even with one run in the third and then took the lead for good with four runs during the fourth.

Callie Brown, Amanda Hainlen, Katie Houlihan and Katie Sears had two hits each for SXU. Sears had two RBI in support of winning pitcher Megan Nonnemacher.

Nonnemacher gave up two runs on five hits while compiling four strikeouts and one walk.

In game two, the Saints' offense had to contend with another Nonnemacher -- Nicole Nonnemacher -- and managed only three hits.

SHU singles were collected by Boss, Polmanteer and Morgan Huttenlocker.

Saint Xavier (40-5-1) took the lead with two runs in the second inning and later tacked on insurance runs in the fourth and fifth frames.

Kasey Kanaga led the Cougar bats with a 3-for-4 performance, including one RBI and one stolen base. Houlihan and Megan James added two hit games. James also had two RBI and one run.

Taylor Hayes was the losing pitcher for Siena Heights (19-19). She allowed four runs on eight hits while recording two strikeouts and four walks. O'Hotzke fired one scoreless inning and struck out two batters in relief.

The Saints will return to action on Wednesday when they participate in two Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament games. Game times are 6 and 8:30 p.m. Opponents have yet to be determined.
