LEXINGTON, Ky. – Siena Heights seniors Ramon Matos and Joudiel Poveymirow were among the men's volleyball players named to the 2022 NVA/AVCA National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) men's volleyball All-America teams when the list was announced this morning (April 11). Both Matos and Poveymirow made the All-America honorable mention list.
Matos adds this award to his Newcomer of the Year and first-team All-WHAC honors from the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) earlier this month. Matos completed the 2022 regular season ranked third in the league with 4.52 kills per set. The Chicago, Illinois, transfer led SHU with 339 kills, 718 attacks, and 26 service aces. He is also fourth on the team in total blocks with 60 (5+55).
"A lot of unknowns transferring in as an upperclassman, playing a new position, learning a new system, and gelling with new teammates," said Coach McKim. "Ramon has stepped up in big ways, and we are happy for his success. I just wish we had Ramon for more than one year!"
Poveymirow was the back-to-back WHAC Libero of the Year and second-team All-WHAC selection this season. The Orlando, Florida native was NVA/AVCA All-America Honorable Mention last season along with NAIA All-America Honorable Mention, making this his third All-America award in his SHU career. Poveymirow finished the 2022 regular season with a league-leading 3.72 digs per set mark. The senior also leads SHU with 275 digs. In addition, he was named WHAC defender of the week once in 2022.
"Joudiel manages two jobs, has success in the classroom, and goes on to lead the conference in digs per set," said men's volleyball head coach Chris McKim. "Jo is the first Siena Heights player to win an All-American award in consecutive years. That is very impressive."
