Men's Soccer Stunned by Late MVNU Goals

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's soccer team allowed a pair of late goals and dropped a 2-1 non-conference contest to Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) on Saturday at O'Laughlin Stadium.

The visiting Cougars (4-3-1) scored in the 81st and 89th minutes to slip past the Saints.

SHU's lone goal was scored by Jakub Havlak, who connected in the 13th minute with an assist from Luis Miguel Anaya. Havlak blasted his shot from 35 yards out.

MVNU finally equalized on a goal by Tyler Lilly. Preston Spurrier smacked a free kick from 40 yards out and Lilly finished the play with a header past SHU goalkeeper Brandon Gonzalez.

With the possibility of overtime looming, Spurrier put the Cougars ahead for good with 1:06 remaining in regulation. He accepted a throw-in from Brent Schilling and pounded the game-winner in from the top of the circle.

Gonzalez had seven saves for the Saints (1-7) while Cougar goalie Jon Gerlach stopped 1 shot.

Mount Vernon Nazarene outshot Siena Heights, 18-6, and held an 8-0 corner-kick advantage.

The Saints will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 27, with their first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match of the season. They are set to visit Concordia for a 5 p.m. start.
