Having lost three players to graduation, the Siena Heights men's lacrosse team has added 15 new faces to its roster as it readies for the 2015 season.
The Saints are coming off a year in which they finished with a 6-8 overall record and 3-1 slate in Central Collegiate Lacrosse Association North Division Play. SHU advanced to the CCLA Tournament semifinals before falling to eventual MCLA national champion Grand Valley State.
SHU head coach Ed Maloney has added depth to the roster at all positions, which has produced more competition in practice. However, a solid core of veterans return.
At Attack, veterans Nick Lyons, Nate Woods, and John Holowaty are joined by Shane Lewandowski, Chris Acton and Derek Martin. The offensive middies return Spencer Macek, Brennen Gohr, Adam Keay and Tom Kreitzer. Filling out the middie position are Dan Diffenderfer, Stephen Bloxam, Danny Orr and Chris Batkins.
Mark Ward is the returning face-off specialist. Competing at that position are newcomers Rick Ames, Travis Byrd and Dan Diffenderfer.
The strength of the team last season was the defense. That is still being anchored by Jordan Martin, Josh Abruzzo, Kevin Kennedy, Tyler Welker and Seth McIntosh. Bringing their energy to that group are Patrick Albrant, Mike Birt, Sam Lehouiller and Alec Coolman.
In goal, Ryan Mailloux returns for his fourth season. However, Tyler Hooper and Drew Pointe bring their talents to that position also.
As intended every year, the schedule has been made increasingly tougher in order to better prepare the team for postseason play. Six of the Saints' opponents are mentioned in the preseason polls and, again, the CCLA is considered the strongest conference in the MCLA.
