WACO, Texas -- Senior defensive back Trevon Claybourne (Redford, Mich.) was named to the 2019 AFCA NAIA Coaches' All-America First-Team Defense that was released on Thursday, December 5.
Claybourne finished the 2019 season with 37 tackles, 22 solo stops, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and two interceptions. He was a key member of a Saints defense that ranked fourth in the country in scoring allowing only 12.1 points per game on average.
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best — the coaches themselves.
The AFCA's NAIA All-America Selection Committee is made up of two or three head coaches from each of the AFCA's seven districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts prior to a conference call between the district chairmen and the committee chairman on which the team is chosen.
The 2018 NAIA All-America Honorable Mention, was one of four players from the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast league on the AFCA first team and he was the only representative from Siena Heights to be selected. He is only the second Saints football player to be named to the AFCA All-America list (Darrius Price was named First-Team AFCA All-America in 2017).
