THE GAME
The Siena Heights football team will return home to host Waldorf (Iowa) in non-conference action on Sept. 21. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at O'Laughlin Stadium.

The Saints are coming off a 35-31 victory over NCAA Division II program Saint Joseph's (Ind.). Tight end Donovan Campbell caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt King with 41 seconds left on the clock and then the SHU defense. The 35 points set a SHU varsity single-game record.

Following Campbell's go-ahead score, the host Pumas began a drive at their own 27-yard-line. They eventually moved the ball to the SHU 5, setting up a first-and-goal with two seconds on the clock. An incomplete pass ended the game.

Campbell had four catches for 68 yards and two scores while King completed 11 of 22 throws for 201 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. King's three TD passes matched a school record.

King also ran for a touchdown and threw to wide receiver Reggie Blackmon for another while linebacker Nic Acton recorded the varsity program's first defensive touchdown via interception return.

Defensive back Sederick A. Dunbar II and linebacker Tyler Karcher had 8 1/2 tackles apiece. Defensive linemen Kyle Connors and Jordan Martin added sacks. Dunbar also forced a fumble.

Waldorf dropped a 45-36 decision at Presentation (S.D.) last week -- its sixth straight loss dating back to 2012.

Quarterback Samuel Fisk completed 28 of 49 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown and thre an intereception. His favorite target was wide receiver James Loydd, who made 11 catches for 173 yards and two scores. Running back Emmanuel Osuchuka finished with 14 carries for 115 yards.

For the Warrior defense, linebacker Chris Oliver had eight tackles, including four for-loss (two sacks). Defensive end Ebben Mignott forced a fumble, which fellow DL Kenneth Hortizuela recovered.

THE COACHES
Jim Lyall (Michigan '74) is in his third season as head coach for Siena Heights, where he now has a 5-7 varsity record. He is 108-99-1 all-time as a collegiate varsity football coach. During SHU's 2011 club season, Lyall went 8-1. He was previously the head coach at Adrian, where he compiled a 103-92-1 varsity slate.

Kent Anderson (Iowa State '85) is in his second season as head coach for Waldorf, where he now has a 2-11 record. He was previously an offensive coordinator for Iowa Wesleyan.

UP NEXT...
The Saints will try to exact revenge on an Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) squad that spoiled the Siena Heights homecoming game in 2012 by defeating host SHU, 20-14, in triple-overtime. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. EST (1:30 CST) on Sept. 28.

ONU will be nearby during its next game when the Tigers visit Concordia for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Olivet Nazarene is currently 0-2 with losses to a pair of teams that were receiving Top 25 votes, but are now ranked -- No. 17 Saint Francis (Ill.) and No. 22 Robert Morris (Ill.).

SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
Waldorf is off to an 0-2 start, dropping early contests to Robert Morris (Ill.) and Presentation (S.D.). The Warriors went 2-9 last year.

A trio of 2012 All-Mid-States Football Association Midwest League honorees returned to the Waldorf roster this year, including James Loydd -- the Warriors' key receiver and return specialist. As a return specialist, Loydd was honored on the All-MSFA Midwest First Team while being named to the Second Team as a wide receiver.

The Warriors' other two returning honorees include defensive lineman Ebben Mignott and defensive back Kenny Brown.

Loyyd has been the Waldorf offense's most dynamic player so far in 2012. In two games, he has 15 receptions for 208 yards and three touchdowns. Loyyd is ranked eighth in the NAIA in receptions per game (7.5) and 13th in all-purpose yards (169).

Other top performers on the WC offense -- so far -- include running back Emmanuel Osuchukwu, quarterback Samuel Fisk and wide receiver Adam Isaacson.

Osuchukwu has been the team's leading rusher with 23 carries for 159 yards while Fisk is 52 of 83 for 580 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions from the QB position. Isaacson has provided a decent target to Fisk, accumulating 11 catches for 68 yards. In the NAIA rankings, Fisk rates 11th in passing yards per game (290.0) and total passing yards (580).

On defense, Brown is the Warriors' leading tackler with 14 stops while linebacker Chris Oliver has 11 1/2 tackles, including four for-loss (two sacks).

Points seem to come in bunches during Waldorf football games. As a matter of fact, Siena Heights 31-21 win in Forest City, Iowa, is the only Warrior contest in which the winning team has not eclipsed 40 points in both 2012 and 2013 -- a stretch that includes 13 games.

During the aforementioned stretch, Waldorf has had point totals of 43, 43, 47, 65 and 76 while also giving up point totals of 42, 44, 45, 48, 48, 49, 51, 52 and 66.

In the NAIA team rankings, Waldorf finds itself 12th in first downs per game (25.0), 13th in passing yards per game (290.), 18th in total passing yards (580) and 20th in total offense (448.0).

LAST TIME WE MET
Quarterback Matt King threw for two touchdowns as the Saints closed out their season with a 31-21 victory over Waldorf on Nov. 3, 2012 at Bolstorff Field in Forest City, Iowa.

King finished 20 of 30 for 206 yards as the Saints battled back from a 14-7 deficit with 24 consecutive points. Tight ends Donovan Campbell and Lyle Van Fleteren had touchdown receptions.

Also for SHU, defensive back Fred Butler and defensive lineman Kyle Connors forced fumbles while another defensive lineman, Jordan Martin, had a recovery.

Running back Drew Milligan added six rushes for 67 yards. Campbell finished with seven catches for 93 yards while VanFleteren and wide receiver Raphael Dunson had five catches apiece for 60 and 40 yards, respectively.

Waldorf was led by quarterback Bryan Smith, who was 15 of 30 for 203 yards and one touchdown, which was caught by wide receiver Lashawn Chapman. Smith also ran for two touchdowns.

For the Warrior defense, linebacker Giano White finished with 7 1/2 tackles while linebacker Demarlo Lewis and free safety Tevin Padgett contributed seven stops apiece.

VIC THE KICK
Siena Heights kicker Victor Bodrie was named the Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.

Bodrie converted five PATs during the Saints' 35-31 victory over NCAA Division II opponent Saint Joseph's (Ind.) on Saturday.

The accolade was the first honor given to a SHU player in the MSFA's weekly report.

UNCHARTED TERRITORY
Quarterback Matt King became the first player in Siena Heights varsity history with four total touchdowns in one game when the Saints defeated Saint Joseph's (Ind.), 35-31. The senior threw for three touchdowns, tying a record set seven days prior by teammate Travis Zajkowski, and tacked on a touchdown run -- the Saints' only rushing score so far in 2012.

King did not play much in SHU's opener, but got the ball in game two and responded by showing his ability to be a dual threat. He completed 11 of 22 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns. His 33-yard scoring jaunt highlighted an 11-rush, 68-yard game on the ground.

STEADY, AS HE GOES
Tight end Donovan Campbell is certainly a go-to guy for the Saints' offense. While his performance at Saint Joe's was not nearly as record-breaking as his effort against Grand View (Iowa), he continues to make an impact. Against the Pumas last week, Campbell had four catches for 68 yards and two scores -- pushing his season touchdown total to five. He now has 14 career varsity touchdowns.

In 12 games as a varsity program, Siena Heights has passed for 18 touchdowns. Campbell leads the way with 11 while fellow tight end Lyle Van Fleteren has four.

LYLE VAN EVERYTHING
While his numbers may not be as gaudy as his fellow tight end, Van Fleteren is certainly no slouch -- both on the gridiron and away from it.

On the field, Van Fleteren sees quite a bit of time on offense, but has also been the Saints' primary punter through two games. He never punted in high school; simply put, he was noticed kicking balls in practice one day and eventually earned himself a spot onto the special teams' squad.

Thus far, Van Fleteren's 2013 stats read: two receptions for 10 yards; one rush for 10 yards; 14 punts for 487 yards (34.8 average); and one kickoff return for seven yards (he smothered a short kick and advanced it).

Van Fleteren is just as impressive off the field. He is a triple-major, styding biology, chemistry and mathematics. The junior was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District team and is also president of the SHU Bass Fishing Club, editor of the Spectra school newspaper, and member of both the math and biology clubs.

STANDING TALL
The Saints' group of playmakers on defense continues to stand tall. They continued their takeaway streak that began in 2012; SHU has had a takeaway in each of its 12 contests as a varsity program. That total includes 24 last season (13 fumble recoveries and 11 interception) and now four in 2013 (three INTs and one fumble recovery).

Linebacker Nic Acton provided a "first" for Siena Heights football history. He became the first Saint to score a touchdown on defense, returning an interception 69 yards to paydirt. At the time, the score helped SHU to a 21-17 lead at Saint Joseph's.

The three captains on defense -- Dunbar, Bragg and Karcher --  continue to display why their peers voted them as the team leaders. So far in 2013, Karcher has 19 1/2 tackles (two for-loss), Dunbar has 17 stops (one for-loss) and Bragg has 13 (1 1/2 for-loss).
