Baseball Splits At Cleary

HOWELL, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team played its second WHAC doubleheader split in as many days, winning one and losing one at Cleary on Sunday. Individual recaps are below.

Game 1: Siena Heights 8, Cleary 7
Relief pitcher Garret Smith entered the game in the first inning, finished up the final 6 2/3 frames, and left two runners on base in the seventh to seal the win.

Smith allowed five runs on seven hits while accumulating 11 strikeouts and two walks.

Jack Semler and Zander Zeiter batted 2-for-4. Zeiter scored two runs and had a triple. Jaozef Del Rosario also scored twice and had a double.

The teams were tied at 6-all through the first two innings before SHU took the lead for good with a 2-run fifth.

Mac Melvin plated Siena Heights' first run in the opening inning with a sac fly before Cleary answered with a 2-run first.

Siena Heights plated five runs in the second inning -- highlighted by a two-run single from Mason Mitchell. Zeiter scored on a balk, Braxton Mustiful delivered an RBI groundout and Semler ripped an RBI single in the inning.

Cleary knotted the score with four runs in its half of the second.

During SHU's 2-run fifth, Zeiter and Kaleb Woods had RBI singles.

The host Cougars pulled with in the seventh before Smith finished off the contest.

Game 2: Cleary 11, Siena Heights 7
After playing from behind most of the game, the Saints pulled into a 7-7 tie in the eighth, but host Cleary scored four in its eighth to take the lead for good.

Mitchell went 3-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and one run. Semler was 2-for-4 with three runs, Zeiter batted 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI, and Justin Holton drove in two runs.

The Saints held the first lead, going up 2-0 in the second on a two-run bomb by Zeiter.

Cleary answered with two in the third and four in the fourth to take a 6-2 edge.

Holton had an RBI single, closing SHU's deficit to 6-3 in the seventh.

Siena Heights trailed 7-3 before scoring four runs in the eighth. Mitchell hit an RBI triple and scored on an error. Later, Holton drew a bases-loaded walk and then Zeiter scored via wild pitch to tie the game.
