Baseball Sweeps Defiance

DEFIANCE, Ohio -- The Siena Heights baseball team won a pair of WHAC contests at Defiance on Tuesday. SHU won 5-3 in the first game and completed the sweep, winning the second game, 17-13. 

The Saints will return to action on Wednesday, April 23, vs Lourdes in a double-header that will count as non-conference contests.  

Game One: Siena Heights 5, Defiance 3

Caden Gomes, Gino Hutchinson, Landon DeVaney, and Brock Olmstead all recorded one hit for SHU.  

Garret Smith was the winning pitcher and was charged with three runs off six hits with two strikeouts, working six innings. Chase Molnar came in for relief, working one scoreless frame and was credited with the save. 

SHU surged in the first with four runs, starting with Devin Eads recording a sacrifice fly. Olmstead walked, followed by the Saints plating two more unearned runs. 

Defiance responded in the third with three runs to trim the deficit to one, making it 4-3. SHU scored one more unearned run in the fourth. 

Game Two: Siena Heights 17, Defiance 13 

Gino Hutchinson, Devin Eads, and Brock Olmstead all had three hits to lead SHU offensively. 

On the hill, Andrew Baum got the win and was charged with four earned runs off 10 hits while forcing two strikeouts. Benjamin Weadock worked two scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out two batters.

After Defiance homered in the first, SHU exploded in the second with a seven-run inning. Nick Zito started SHU off with a two-RBI single, followed by a two-RBI double from Hutchinson. Gomes, Eads, and DeVaney all closed the seven-run inning with RBI singles. 

Hutchinson and Gomes extended the lead for SHU in the third with an RBI single from Hutchinson, followed by a sacrifice fly from Gomes to make it 9-2. Defiance homered in the bottom of the third. 

SHU responded in the fourth with an RBI single from Olmstead. 

In the fifth, SHU plated six more when both Eads and Aidan Grinstead recorded two-RBI singles. Olmstead tallied another RBI single, followed by Hutchinson ending the six-run inning with an RBI walk to put the Saints up 16-2. 

Defiance stormed back with a seven-run inning. SHU plated one more unearned run to hold off a 13-1 scoring stretch from Defiance.
