Five Saints Honored in WHAC Baseball Awards

The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) announced the 2020 baseball awards on Wednesday (May 20). Marcus Beeson (Junior/St. Louis, Mich.), Delver Freites (Senior/Barquisimeto, Venezuela), Michael Jones (Senior/Taylor, Mich.), Jacob Simmers (Junior/New Boston, Mich.), and Andrew Werth (Junior/Dearborn, Mich.) were listed on the All-Academic team. Jacob Simmers was also the team's representative on the Champions of Character squad.

Beeson has made 26 at-plate appearances, starting in six of those appearances. During that time he's recorded 37 strike-outs, two saves, an ERA of 8.02, and a 3-6 record. In the field, he's earned 10 total-chances, one put-out, eight assists, and a .900 fielding percentage.

Freites appeared in 23 games during his career at Siena Heights. He has totaled 55 at-bats, nine hits, three RBIs, a batting average of .164, an on-base percentage of .242, and a slugging percentage of .182. He has contributed on the defensive side as well with 123 total-chances, 105 put-outs, 16 assists, and a fielding percentage of .984. He has been selected to the WHAC All-Academic list twice (2018 & 2019), and the NAIA Scholar-Athlete list in 2018.

Jones tallied 18 at-plate appearances, starting in six during his time at SHU. He's earned 18 strike-outs, one save, an ERA of 6.80, and a 3-2 record. Defensively, he's recorded 11 total-chances, four put-outs, four assists, and a .727 fielding percentage. He was named with WHAC All-Academic and Naia Scholar-Athlete honors last season.

Simmers has recorded 24.2 innings pitches with 17 at-plate appearances. He's tallied 17 strike-outs, an ERA of 10.58, a record of 1-1, three total-chances, one put-out, and two assists. 

Werth has made five at-plate appearances, recording 3.1 innings pitched. During that time, he's earned two strikeouts and a 5.40 ERA.

The 2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the All-WHAC teams for baseball were not awarded.
