Baseball Splits WHAC Doubleheader at Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team split a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader with Cornerstone on Friday, claiming a 7-3 victory in game one before dropping a 5-4 decision in game two.

Austin Hauck, Mike Lollo and Joe Williams had two hits apiece in support of winning pitcher Thomas McCarter in the nine-inning opener.

Williams (triple, double) also scored one run and drove in two others. Lollo (double) scored two runs and Hauck finished with one run and two RBI.

The Saints (7-7, 1-1) fell behind 1-0 in the third inning, but struck for two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.

During the fifth, Hauck and Drew Milligan had RBI singles. Then, in the sixth, Williams and Logan Curtis smashed RBI triples before Hauck ripped another run-scoring single.

SHU expanded its lead to 7-1 in the seventh on an RBI single by Williams.

McCarter pitched into the ninth, facing three batters in the frame, before Ben Finn came on in relief to strike out two batters in one scoreless inning of work.

McCarter allowed three runs on 11 hits while finishing with two strikeouts and two walks.

Zach Harbison (double) batted 3-for-4 with a run scored for Cornerstone. Zach Bohl (double) went 2-for-4. Kyle Marburger was the losing pitcher, compiling five strikeouts and one walk in 5 1/3 innings.

During the seven-inning nightcap, Siena Heights took a 3-0 lead, but allowed single runs in four straight innings as the Golden Eagles (12-8, 2-2) took a 4-3 lead. After SHU tied the contest at 4-all in the seventh, Cornerstone won on a walk-off, one-out RBI single by Nick Covello in the bottom half of the fram.

Eric Henderson went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI for the Saints' offense.

Jordan Basinger started on the hill, giving up four runs on seven hits while totaling five strikeouts and two walks. Reliever Travis Mielcarek suffered the loss.

SHU took a 1-0 lead on a CU error in the first and then tacked on two more via Alec Duncan sacrifice fly and Henderson RBI single to make it 3-0 in the second.

Trailing 4-3, the Saints got a two-out RBI triple from Dan Muller to tie the contest and set the stage for Covello.

Covello finished 3-for-4 with two triples, two RBI and one run for the Eagles. Winning pitcher Luke Heller pitched all seven innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits while compiling four strikeouts and three walks.

The Saints and Golden Eagles will wrap up their four-game WHAC series in Grand Rapids on Saturday.
