Baseball Falls to Adrian on Game-Ending Single

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Joe Williams continued his strong start to the season, batting 3-for-5 with a double, in the Siena Heights baseball team's 6-5 loss to cross-town rival Adrian on Wednesday at Nicolay Field.

Williams also scored a run for the Saints (6-7), who lost on a ninth-inning walk-off single by Adrian's Braydon Gomes.

Drew Byers had a 2-for-3 day and scored a run, Drew Milligan batted 2-for-4 with an RBI and one stolen base, and Mike Lollo went 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

SHU took 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the second and fourth innings, respectively, but each time, the Bulldogs responded in their half of the frames. The first Saint run scored on an AC error and then the second Saint run came in on an RBI single by Milligan.

Dan Heatherly cranked a three-run home run for Adrian in the fifth, giving the host Bulldogs a 5-2 lead that held until SHU's eighth.

In the Siena Heights eighth, Nolan Herendeen had an RBI single and Marcus Stewart smacked a sacrifice fly before Zack Dunlop tied the contest at 5-all with an RBI single.

Gomes' game-ending hit came with one out and the bases loaded.

For the Saints' pitching staff, Thomas McCarter, Travis Mielcarek, Brent Vaccaro, Jordan Basinger and Justin McPherson threw one scoreless inning each.

Jordan Frayer started on the hill for Adrian, working five innings. Tommy Eng pitched 1 1/3 scoreless frames to earn the win in relief.

Siena Heights will return to action this weekend with a four-game Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series against Cornerstone. First-pitch is 2 p.m. on Friday at the SHU Baseball Diamond.
