ADRIAN, Mich. -- Brett Kuebler (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) tossed a complete game in the opener of Sunday's Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader as the Siena Heights baseball team earned a split with Aquinas, 7-1 and 3-2, on Sunday at SHU Baseball Field, clinching a spot in the WHAC Tournament.
Kuebler surrendered one run on eight hits and finished with one strikeout and five walks while the SHU offense rapped 14 hits, including four for extra bases, in the game-one clincher.
Cory Lehman (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic), Josh White (Brooklyn, Mich./Columbia Central), Brett Howard(Sylvania, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales) and Todd Vandercook (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) had two hits apiece for the Siena Heights offense. Leading 2-1, the Saints scored the game's final five runs to secure the victory.
In the second inning, a two-run triple by Vandercook put the hosts ahead for good. A third-inning, bases-loaded walk to Aquinas' Michael Wood accounted for the visitors' only run.
SHU began tacking on insurance in the sixth when Howard ripped an RBI single. Howard had another run-scoring single in the seventh while Schwartz had the frame's biggest blow -- a two-run double -- as Siena Heights snagged a 6-1 lead through seven.
The Blue and Gold added their final score in the ninth on an RBI double by Stewart.
Vince Misiewicz was the losing pitcher for Aquinas. He had five strikeouts, one walk and one hit batsman, but gave up six runs on seven hits. Offensively, Allen Manyen (double) and Brent Butgereit had two hits each.
In the second game, Aquinas battled back from a 2-0 deficit, eventually taking the lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Brendan Penny.
SHU took its only lead on an RBI single by Kyle Johnson (Adrian, Mich./Adrian) in the second and then pushed its lead to 2-0 on a bases-loaded walk by B.J. Salazar (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Eastern) during the fourth.
Aquinas tied the game at 2-all in the fifth on a two-run single by Taylor Pawlanta.
Jake Sperry (Livonia, Mich./Westland John Glenn) started on the mound for Siena and worked two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Nathan Wilkerson (Osseo, Mich./Hudson), Tyler Butlin (China, Mich./Saint Clair) and Matt King(Rockville, Ind./Rockville) tossed shutout frames. Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) suffered the loss.
