ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team was tripped up by Trine (Ind.), 5-3, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday at the Siena Heights Baseball Field.
Cory Lehman (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) went 2-for-4 with a home run while Brett Howard (Sylvania, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales), Todd Vandercook (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) and Robbie Schwartz (Adrian, Mich./Adrian) contributed doubles to the Saints' attack.
Braxton Siddons was the offensive leader for Trine, going 2-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs. In the first inning, he had an RBI double, putting the Thunder (8-7) ahead, 1-0.
The Saints tried to answer immediately, loading the bases in the first on consecutive singles by Marcus Stewart(Clinton, Mich./Clinton), Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) and Lehman, but were unable to plate any runs after loading the bases with no outs.
In the second, Siena Heights (15-12) scored its first run. Vandercook smacked his two-bagger with one out and advanced to third base on a Trine error. After that, he scored when Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln Consolidated); credit Caldwell with an RBI.
Trine took the lead for good in the third on a three-run double by Siddons. The visitors tacked on another run in the fifth, taking advantage of a SHU error to grab a 5-1 advantage.
The Saints answered with single runs in the fifth and eighth. In the fifth, Howard ripped a two-out double to plate Stewart, who reached with a walk. Lehman drilled his homer down the left-field line in the eighth.
Jordan Baer was credited with the win for Trine. He pitched three innings in relief of starter Kyle Lidster. Jeremy Spalding earned the save.
For SHU, Travis Mielcarek (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) started on the hill, giving up four earned runs on five hits while finishing with five strikeouts, three walks and one hit batsman. Tayler Thelen (Cadillac, Mich./Grand Ledge) finished up the game with four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and compiling one strikeout, two walks and one hit batter.
The Saints will return to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play this weekend with Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders at Indiana Tech. Both twinbills are set to begin at 1 p.m.
