ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team lost a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contests on Sunday to Madonna, 9-3 and 4-1, at Siena Heights Baseball Field.
The Saints (14-11, 4-4) fell behind in the nine-inning opener, 7-0, and rallied for three runs in the eighth, but could not complete the comeback.
Josh White (Brooklyn, Mich./Columbia Central) led off the eighth with a single. Marcus Stewart (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) also singled before Mike Lollo (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) connected for an RBI single. With two outs, Cory Lehman(Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) hammered a two-run triple.
White and Stewart finished with 2-for-3 games. Stewart and Brett Howard (Sylvania, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales) had doubles in support of losing pitcher Brett Kuebler (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic).
Kuebler pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits. He recorded two strikeouts, one walk and one hit batsman.
Nathan Wilkerson (Osseo, Mich./Hudson) recorded two outs without allowing a run in relief. Riley Smith (Farmington, Mich./Farmington) pitched two innings and struck out two without giving up an earned run.
The Crusaders built a 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Logan Curtis in the second and fourth innings. Steve Pelletier had an RBI groundout in the Madonna fifth.
The visitors tacked on four scores during the sixth. Billy Hardin had a two-run single while Pelletier and Tyler Cotter smashed RBI doubles.
In the eighth, Pelletier had an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch.
Matthew Cook was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs on six hits while finishing with seven strikeouts and one walk over eight innings. Andy Omilian pitched a scoreless ninth.
During the nightcap, Madonna (20-12, 5-3) took the lead early, scoring its first run on a first-inning SHU error. A two-run Pelletier single expanded the Crusaders' advantage to 3-0 in the fourth.
Siena Heights answered back in the fourth with its only run. White singled and scored on an RBI single by Chaz Poindexter (Ypsilanti, Mich./Milan).
An Alex Charles single pushed the Madonna lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning.
White finished 2-for-2 while Todd Vandercook (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) went 2-for-3.
Matt King (Rockville, Ind./Rockville) was the losing pitcher. He threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits while compiling three strikeouts, four walks and three hit batsmen.
Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) pitched 1 1/3 of scoreless relief, recording two strikeouts.
