ADRIAN, Mich. -- Senior shortstop Cory Lehman (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) was named Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Year while two other Saints joined him on the All-WHAC First Team, as announced by the league on Wednesday. All five SHU seniors were honored by the WHAC.
Along with Lehman, Brett Howard (Sylvania, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales) and Corey Alexander (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) were named to the All-WHAC First Team.
Lehman has been honored four straight times by the WHAC; he was named to the First Team in 2011 and was an Honorable Mention in 2010 and 2009. Alexander was previously an Honorable Mention in 2010.
Lehman and Alexander were also honored on the WHAC Gold Glove Team while Lehman and another senior, Josh White(Brooklyn, Mich./Columbia Central), were selected to the Academic All-WHAC Team. It was Lehman's second consecutive conference academic award.
Senior pitcher Brett Kuebler (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) received his third All-WHAC Honorable Mention; he previously received the award in 2011 and 2009. White earned his second straight Honorable Mention.
Other All-WHAC Honorable Mentions included junior catcher Dan Abbott (Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland), junior second baseman Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) and junior pitcher Jake Sperry (Livonia, Mich./Westland John Glenn). The mention was Abbott's second; he earned one in 2010, also.
Sperry was also recognized as a member of the WHAC Champions of Character Team for the second straight year.
Statistically, Lehman has ranked among the WHAC leaders in several categories. After opening day of the WHAC Tournament, he rates second with a .398 batting average, 19 doubles, 74 hits and 109 total bases while rating third with 144 defensive assists, a .586 slugging percentage and a .475 on-base percentage. Lehman also ranks fourth with five triples. He has also compiled two homers, 25 walks and 11 stolen bases.
Howard is batting .308 with four home runs, 31 runs, a team-leading 40 RBIs and a conference-leading 23 doubles.
Alexander leads the WHAC with 97 2/3 innings pitched and ranks third in ERA. He was among three SHU pitchers to appear among the Top 10 of WHAC's ERA leaders; Kuebler was sixth with a 3.95 and Sperry was ninth with a 3.18.
Alexander currently holds a 7-4 record, including seven complete games, 62 strikeouts and a .231 opponents' batting average.
Kuebler has a 4-4 record with five complete games and a .255 opponents' average while Sperry is 5-3 with a save and .251 opponents' average.
Benschoter is currently third in the WHAC in battling average with a .352. He also has six doubles, one triple, one homer and 24 RBIs.
Abbott has a .289 average with four homers, 13 doubles and 24 RBIs while White is batting .297 with seven doubles, two triples, one homer and 30 runs scored.
