Lehman, Lollo Lead Offense in SHU Baseball Win over Adrian

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Cory Lehman (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) and Mike Lollo (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) smacked three hits apiece with Lehman falling a homer short of the cycle as the Siena Heights baseball team defeated Adrian, 10-4, in non-conference play at the Siena Heights Baseball Field on Wednesday.

Lehman went 3-for-3 with a triple, double, three runs and one RBI. Lollo added a 3-for-4 game, including a double.

Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson), Josh White (Brooklyn, Mich./Columbia Central) and Dan Abbott (Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland) went 2-for-4. Both of Abbott's knocks were doubles while White had one two-bagger for the Saints (21-16), who held a dedication ceremony to celebrate the inaugural season on their new diamond.

The Bulldogs (17-6) took the game's first lead, going up 2-0 in the first inning, but were held in check by pitchers Brett Kuebler (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) and Jake Sperry (Livonia, Mich./Westland John Glenn) long enough for SHU to take the lead for good.

Adrian's Sam Fischer and Andrew DeLuca touched up Saint starter Corey Alexander (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) for back-to-back triples with DeLuca plating Fischer. Mitch Stefanski then drove in DeLuca while reaching on an error.

After Alexander went two innings, allowing two runs on three hits, Kuebler and Sperry combined for four shutout innings; credit Sperry with the win.

Trailing 2-0, the Saints struck for two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Lehman led off the fourth with a triple and scored SHU's first run on a sacrifice fly by Brett Howard (Sylvania, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales). White and Abbott followed with back-to-back doubles with White's run pulling SHU even at 2-2.

In the fifth, Lehman walked and benefited from two Adrian errors to score the go-ahead run. Howard, who reached on an error, scored on a double by Abbott. Abbott then crossed the plate on a double by Lollo, putting the Saints ahead 5-2.

The Bulldogs trimmed their deficit to 5-4 on a two-run single by Fischer before the hosts rebutted with five unanswered runs.

During the SHU seventh, Lehman doubled and Howard was intentionally walked, setting the stage for an RBI single from White. The Saints also scored on an error, increasing the lead to 7-4.

Three more insurance runs were tacked on in the eighth. Lollo doubled, Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln Consolidated) reached when his sac bunt was misplayed and Marcus Stewart (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) got on with a bunt single, setting up Benschoter for a two-run single and Lehman for a sac fly.

Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) finished out the game for the Saints, recording two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 ninth.

Eric Sims was the losing pitcher for Adrian. He worked three innings in relief of starter Craig Steadman. Sims gave up five runs (two earned) on four hits while Steadman surrendered two runs on seven hits. Fischer finished 3-for-5 at the plate.

Siena Heights will be back in action at home this weekend with a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheaders. Northwestern Ohio will visit SHU Baseball Field for 1 p.m. twinbills on Saturday and Sunday.
