ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team lost a non-conference game to Davenport, 6-5, at the Siena Heights Baseball Field on Tuesday.
Facing an early 6-1 deficit, the Saints scored one run in the fourth and three in the seventh, but were unable to find their way into a tie.
Dan Abbott (Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland) led SHU with a 3-for-5 day. He doubled and drove in two runs. Todd Vandercook (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) added two runs scored.
The visiting Panthers (10-6) jumped in front immediately with a three-run first inning. Austin Licon had an RBI single, Jotham Woo ripped an RBI double and Mike Allen drove in a run via groundout.
Siena Heights answered back in its half of the first when Lollo hit a leadoff double and scored on a Vandercook sacrifice fly, trimming the Saints' deficit to 3-1.
Later, Allen connected for the game's big blow -- a three-run home run -- to give the Panthers a 6-1 advantage in the third.
In the fourth, Vandercook and Cory Lehman (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) opened the inning with a walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively, and set the stage for an RBI single by Abbott.
SHU took a large chunk out of its deficit in the seventh. Marcus Stewart (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) reached base with a walk and then Vandercook got on base due to a costly Davenport error.
Brett Howard (Sylvania, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales) then smashed a two-run double down the left-field line. Abbott followed with an RBI double of his own, pulling the Saints within 6-5, but that was as close as the hosts would get to Davenport.
Mike Lollo (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) also had a double for the Siena Heights offense.
Travis Mielcarek (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) suffered the loss on the mound as six pitchers got work for the Saints. Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt), Nathan Wilkerson (Osseo, Mich./Hudson) and Riley Smith(Farmington, Mich./Farmington) worked scoreless innings. Jake Sperry (Livonia, Mich./Westland John Glenn) fired two shutout frames.
For Davenport, Jason Pierce was 2-for-3 with a run, Brandon Bongard scored twice and Allen had his four RBIs. Drew Sain was the winning pitcher, finishing with six strikeouts and one walk in four innings of work. Corey Anderson tossed two scoreless innings for the save.
Siena Heights will be in action next when it opens Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday. The Saints will begin a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Concordia and then play another 1 p.m. twinbill at Concordia on Sunday.
