BABSON PARK, Fla. -- The Siena Heights baseball team split a pair of contests on Sunday, defeating Purdue North Central (Ind.) in eight innings, 3-2, before falling to Walsh (Ohio), 5-0, at Webber International's Heart of Central Florida Medical Center Field.
In the opener, Brett Howard and Dan Abbott connected for back-to-back, two-out doubles, with Abbott plating Howard for the go-ahead run.
The Saints (4-3) trailed twice -- 1-0 and 2-1 -- but came back to tie the contest on both occasions.
Mike Lollo delivered an RBI single for SHU, plating pinch-runner Kyle Johnson to tie the game at 1-all in the fifth. Johnson had stolen second base after taking the place of Chaz Poindexter, who reached base with a walk.
Siena Heights was down to its final strike in the seventh until Todd Vandercook extended the game with an RBI single. He brought in pinch-runner Marcus Stewart. Stewart took the place of Corey Caldwell, who got on base via error.
Corey Alexander earned the win on the mound. He worked all eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out two batters.
Lollo went 3-for-4.
For Purdue North Central, Jeff Strbjak batted 2-for-3 with a double. Colin Willis went 2-for-4 and Alex Smith doubled.
Jordan Polito pitched the first six innings and allowed one earned run on six hits while recording three strikeouts and four walks.
Chuck Meyers pitched the final two frames, allowing one run on four hits. He had two strikeouts, but suffered the loss.
Against Walsh, the Saints committed four errors and a trio of baserunning blunders, which the Cavaliers capitalized upon.
Todd Vandercook had a double while starting pitcher Brett Kuebler worked five innings. Kuebler gave up four runs -- only two earned -- on three hits. He also walked two batters and hit two others.
Travis Mielcarek and Riley Smith pitched one inning in relief each. Mielcarek struck out one batter and Smith had a 1-2-3 frame.
For Walsh, the key blow was a two-run double by Steve Wido.
Tim Stinson also doubled in support of Bill Gura, who fired a six-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk.
The Saints will return to action on Monday with a 2:30 p.m. matchup against Husson (Maine) at Chain 'o Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.
