Walk-Off Homer Sinks SHU Baseball

FROSTPROOF, Fla. -- The Siena Heights baseball team fell victim to a game-ending home run and suffered a 5-4 eight-inning loss to Bellevue (Neb.) at the Warner (Fla.) Invitational on Friday.

Tanner Moore blasted a one-out round-tripper in the eighth to lift the Bruins.

SHU pitcher Corey Alexander was the tough-luck loser, recording 10 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs on eight hit and did not walk a batter.

The Saints built a 4-1 lead before Bellevue scored four unanswered runs.

In the first inning, Todd Vandercook, Kyle Benschoter and Cory Lehman opened the contest with consecutive singles. Brett Howard drove in Vandercook with a sacrifice fly and Alec Duncan collected an RBI when he reached on an error. Lehman scored the second Siena Heights run.

After an RBI triple by Bellevue's Kevin Nelson, the Saints came back with two more runs in the fourth.

Siena Heights loaded the bases without a hit -- a Josh White walk, a Chaz Poindexter hit-by-pitch and a Marcus Stewart walk. Benschoter got an RBI when he was dinged by a pitch, bringing in White. Poindexter then scored on a sac fly by Lehman.

The Bruins tied the game at 4-all with three runs in the fifth. Spencer Duggan had a two-run triple and Moore smacked an RBI single.

Vandercook led the SHU offense, going 2-for-5.

Robert Greco was the winning pitcher. He threw the last two innings, finishing with five strikeouts.

The Saints began their second game of the day against Purdue North Central (Ind.), but the game was suspended by rain. Siena Heights currently trails, 1-0. The contest will pick back up on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

SHU also has a chance to play for the invitational championship with a win over PNC and help from other results.
