White, Sperry Lead SHU Baseball Charge to WHAC Final

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Josh White (Brooklyn, Mich./Columbia Central) homered, doubled and scored three runs while Jake Sperry (Livonia, Mich./Westland John Glenn) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning as the Saints' baseball team defeated Madonna, 7-3, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament action at the SHU Baseball Field on Thursday.

With the victory, fifth-seeded SHU advanced to the championship round of the tournament, which will take place on Friday.

Brett Howard (Sylvania, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales), Mike Lollo (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) and Dan Abbott(Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland) added two hits apiece for for the Saints (30-23), who reached the 30-win plateau for the third time in their history and first time since 1994.

Howard and Todd Vandercook (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) smacked doubles in support of Sperry, who tossed 7 2/3 innings for the win.

Sperry surrendered three runs on five hits while compiling three strikeouts and three walks. He retired the first 10 hitters he faced -- and faced the minimum through four frames.

Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to earn the save, finishing with one punchout. Kret has two saves in the WHAC Tournament and Sperry has one.

The Saints jumped on the board with a three-run fourth inning and led the rest of the way. Howard drilled a two-run double before Vandercook hit his two-bagger to drive in a run, giving SHU a 3-0 lead.

Three-seed Madonna (35-20) pushed its first run across in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Josh Deeg.

Siena Heights tacked on solo insurance runs in the seventh and eighth on RBI singles by Lollo and Abbott, respectively, to increase its lead to 5-1.

In the Crusader eighth, Steve Pelletier's two-run single trimmed the SHU advantage to 5-3 and chased Sperry. Kret then hit Madonna's Matt Cook with a pitch before inducing an inning-ending forceout to escape his second bases-loaded jam in as many days.

White connected for his round-tripper in the ninth, crushing a pitch over the left-field wall to forge the game's 7-3 final score.

Cook was the losing pitcher for Madonna. He threw seven innings and struck out five batters.

SHU will play take on Indiana Tech on Friday at noon. The WHAC Tournament if-necessary game would follow in the event of a Saint lost.

The Warriors advanced to the championship round with a 13-7 victory over Davenport and then a 2-1 10-inning win against Madonna. They need two wins to win the WHAC Tournament.
