GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Brett Howard (Sylvania, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales) had a solid day at the plate, batting 5-for-9 with four doubles, but the Siena Heights baseball team fell victim a pair of Davenport comebacks and lost, 10-9 and 8-6, in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday.

In the opener, the Saints held a 9-4 lead before Davenport scored six unanswered runs.

Howard gave SHU the lead in the first inning with a two-run double -- a 2-0 advantage the Saints held until Davenport's three-run third in which Brandon Bongard had an RBI single and Jotham Woo connected for a two-run double.

Derrick Gentile added a solo homer in the hosts' fourth, putting Davenport ahead 4-2 until a seven-run Siena Heights sixth.

During SHU's big inning, Howard had a two-run double, Josh White (Brooklyn, Mich./Columbia Central) and Dan Abbott(Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland) smashed RBI singles and Todd Vandercook (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) drew a bases-loaded walk.

Davenport eventually answered with a big inning of its own, pushing across five runs in the eighth. Brandon Spykerman had an RBI hit-by-pitch and Bongard hit an RBI single before Austin Licon's two-out, three-run double to tie the game at 9-all.

In the ninth, a two-out RBI single from Drew Kennedy lifted the Panthers to the win.

Chad Detwiler was the winning pitcher after throwing three innings of scoreless relief. Starter Jordan Anderson went 5 1/3 innings, finishing with five strikeouts and five walks.

For SHU, Brett Kuebler (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) worked 7 2/3 innings, compiling two strikeouts, three walks and three hit batters before giving way to reliever Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt), who suffered the loss.

Offensively, Howard led the way with a 3-for-5 game including two doubles, one run and four RBIs. White, Mike Lollo(Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) and Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) added two-hit games while Vandercook andCory Lehman (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) scored two runs each.

In the nightcap, the Saints were one out away from victory before the Panthers forced the decisive extra innings. A two-run homer by Kennedy put DU ahead for good in the 10th.

The Saints held leads of 2-0, 4-3 and 6-4 before Davenport's final comeback.

In the second, Benschoter put SHU ahead 2-0 with a two-run single. The Panthers scored three runs on one Siena Heights error in the third before the Saints responded with an Abbott two-run homer to go up, 4-3.

Kennedy tied the contest at 4-all in the fourth with an RBI double.

Robbie Schwartz (Adrian, Mich./Adrian) eventually gave the Saints their final lead with a two-run double in the fifth.

Davenport (30-15, 15-7) came back with two runs in the seventh on a two-out, two-run single to tie the game at 6-6.

Panther relievers Corey Anderson and Ryan Butzer worked shutout innings to earn the win and save, respectively. Starter Drew Sain went eight innings, finishing with nine strikeouts, five walks and one hit batsman.

For SHU (25-20, 11-11), Corey Alexander (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) pitched 9 1/3 innings and suffered the loss. He had six strikeouts, four walks and one hit batter.

On offense, Howard went 2-for-5 with two doubles and three runs. Lollo also had two hits.

The teams will meet again on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
