ADRIAN, Mich. -- Each academic year, the Siena Heights University Athletic Department awards the Thomas Emmet Sr. Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award to both a male and a female junior student-athlete. This year's recipients were Davis Longyear (men's golf) and Peyton Banks (women's basketball, Wadsworth, Ohio).
The award is given to student-athletes who excel in the classroom and the athletic arena and is named after Thomas Emmet Sr., a Siena Heights College employee. SHU coaches nominate and select the winners, and those selected receive a scholarship.
Longyear is a business major with a concentration in finance with a 3.92 GPA. He is a three-year starter on the men's golf team and has earned several all-tournament team honors and medalist honors. He has a career-low round of 69.
"Davis is the description of the term student-athlete. A great student, a great player, a great teammate, and most importantly, a great kid," said SHU men's golf coach Al Sandifer. "He always represents our university and our golf program in a first-class manner and is someone who we can count on to give 100%."
Longyear was a member of the WHAC All-Academic squad this past season.
Banks is an elementary education major with a 3.58 GPA. Banks recorded 12 double-doubles for the 2021-22 season. The Wadsworth, Ohio native leads the WHAC with 18.3 PPG and 532 total points. She ranks second in free throw percentage with 87.5 and rebounds per game with 9.3. In addition, Banks is 3rd in field goal percentage with 51.0.
"Peyton's hard work has allowed her to excel both on the floor and in the classroom," said SHU head women's basketball coach Sue Syljebeck. "She is the true meaning of student-athlete."
Banks was named NAIA All-America Third-Team, WBCA All-America, CoSIDA Academic All-America® Second-Team, co-WHAC Player of the Year—her third consecutive league player of the year award—and first-team All-WHAC for the second-straight season.
