Coach Richards is in his eight-season as Head Coach of the Siena Heights Women’s Track and Field team and seventh season as Head Coach of the SHU Women's Cross-Country Team. He is also in his twelfth year as an Assistant Coach for the Saints’ Men’s Track and Field Team. Richards’ specialties include, but are not limited to, the Pole Vault (6 National Champions), High Jump (3 National Champions), Hurdles (4 National champions), Multi-events and Distance. He is responsible for recruitment and overseeing the academic progress and eligibility of all student-athletes for the Saints. Richards also serves as Stadium Director for Siena’s state-of-the-art Track and Field, Football, Lacrosse, and Soccer venue, O’Laughlin Stadium.
The Lady Saints have been top 10 in the Country for 8 of the last 9 seasons. This feat is unprecedented, and Richards hopes history keeps repeating itself year after year. 2016 was an incredible year for the Women’s Track and Field and Cross-Country teams. The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association rated the Lady Saints program as the 5th best running program in the NAIA overall. Most importantly, his team’s GPA has improved by leaps and bounds. The Lady Saints Cross Country team shared about a 3.7 GPA while the Women’s Track team averaged about a 3.5. This is the team’s biggest accomplishment. On the National scene, In 2016, the Women’s Track and Field Team finished 4th at the NAIA Indoor National Championships, finished 3rd at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships and the Lady Saints won the WHAC Outdoor Conference Championships; it's first since 1997. The Lady Saints repeated as Conference Champions in 2017. Richards was also named the “WHAC Conference Coach of the Year” for both 2016 and 2017.”
During his eleven seasons at Siena Heights, Coach Richards mentored 16 individual National Champions, 20 National Champion runners-ups, 121 NAIA All-America honorees, 352 National Championship Qualifiers, 91 individual Conference Champions, 3 American Record Holders, 1 NAIA Record Holder, 11 WHAC record-holders and his athletes have broken Siena Heights collegiate records 113 times.
Prior to joining SHU, Richards coached in the Michigan high school ranks for 18 years. During that time, he helped develop 14 regional championship teams in both cross country and track and field. He has also earned 42 conference championships as well as many individual state champions in the pole vault, hurdles, distance, long jump, and sprint relays.
Richards earned his Associates Degree in Liberal Arts from Mott Community College and his B. S. in English from Oakland University.
First and foremost, Coach Richards is a father. Richards has four children and two grandchildren. Charlie (33), a 2x All-American runner for SVSU and now teaches and coaches at Berrien Springs High School and was voted Assistant Coach of the Year for the State of Michigan. Charlie's twin brother Ben (31), also a stand out performer on the SVSU Track and Field team, has a career in the Continued Learning Program with the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. Joe (27), a former Concert Master violinist, now teaches Orchestra for Troy School District. Joseph also played Collegiate Golf for Adrian College. Daughter Andrea is a Graduate of Siena Heights University and was a four-time First Team All-Conference athlete on SHU’s Ladies Golf Team. Andrea also won the prestigious Thomas Emmet award for Student-Athlete of the year at Siena. She is now a PGA Teaching Professional at Flint Golf Club. Coach Richards is also the proud grandparent of Evelyn and Katherine, Charlie, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth are the blessed parents.
