Seven SHU Women's Lacrosse Players Receive WHAC Honors

The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) announced the 2020 women's lacrosse awards on Tuesday (May 12). Marissa Cirino (Junior/Canton, Mich.), Elizabeth Elliott (Junior/Canton, Mich.), Mackenzie Fisette (Senior/Sout Lyon, Mich.), Danielle LaPointe (Senior/Rochester Hills, Mich.), Mariah Smythe (Junior/Novi, Mich.), Katherine Tapia (Senior/Saline, Mich.), and Natalie Williams (Senior/South Lyon, Mich.) were listed on the all-academic squad. Mariah Smythe was the team's representative on the Champions of Character team.

Cirino appeared in 40 games and made 39 starts during her career at Siena Heights. She has totaled 175 points (113g, 62a) and pulled in 109 draw controls. She has contributed on the defensive end as well with 124 ground balls and 41 caused turnovers. During her three seasons, she has already topped the career record books at SHU in points per game (4.38), assists (62), assists per game (1.55), man-up goals (9), and man-down goals (2). She has been selected to the second-team All-WHAC twice (2017 & 2018).

Elliott has played in 28 games and started 18 times, 17 of which were in goal. She has totaled 46 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers during her career. She has played 1011:20 between the pipes for the Saints. During that time she made 179 saves and had a 5-6 record.

Fisette saw action in 54 games, starting in all but one of those appearances. She scored 15 points (11g, 4a) and hauled in 93 ground balls while finishing her career with 36 caused turnovers and 86 draw controls. Last season she was named second-team All-WHAC and WHAC all-academic before also earning a place on the NAIA Scholar-Athlete list.

LaPointe made 12 starts in 30 appearances. She finished with four points (1g, 3a). On the defensive side of the ball, she amassed 15 ground balls, nine caused turnovers, and two draw controls. The senior defender was named WHAC All-Academic and NAIA Scholar-Athlete last season.

Smythe appeared in 34 games and made 20 starts, 19 of which were in net. She scored one goal and has hauled in 54 ground balls while totaling eight caused turnovers. As a goalie, she played 1173:11 and made 202 saves on the way to a 7-5 career record. 

Tapia has played 56 games, starting 54 of them during her time at SHU. She has recorded 109 points (78g, 31a) and has scooped up 100 ground balls, caused 34 turnovers, and 49 draw controls. She was selected second-team All-WHAC and WHAC All-Academic last season.

Williams saw action in 58 games and made 56 starts. She finished her career with 130 points (100g, 30a). One defense she contributed 108 ground balls, 42 caused turnovers, and 50 draw controls. She was a WHAC All-Academic team member and an NAIA Scholar-Athlete last year.

The 2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the All-WHAC teams for women's lacrosse were not awarded.
