SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's basketball team took on No. 20 Lawrence Tech in the quarterfinal match-up of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday. The seventh seed Saints, fell to the second seed Blue Devils by a score of 72-54.
Siena Heights opened the contest on a high note defensively, holding Lawrence Tech to just six points in the first quarter and scoring 17 of their own. The roles were reversed in the second period, as the Saints scored just six to the 16 scored by LTU, sending the contest into the half with SHU leading 23-22.
The third period ended with Lawrence Tech (25-5 overall) leading 48-40, but led by as much as 12 points in the frame. The Saints continued to battle until the end, but came up short, bringing their season to a close.
SHU finished the contest shooting 19-60 (31.7%) from the floor, 4-13 (30.8%) from three point range and 12-24 (50%) from the free throw line. LTU completed 23-54 (42.6%) attempts from the field, 10-23 (43.5%) from behind the arc and 16-24 (66.7%) from the charity stripe.
Alyssa Larson led the way for Siena Heights with a double-double including 13 points and 10 rebounds. Demi Russell and Syarra Sellers added eight points each while Taylar McNeal helped on the glass, pulling down seven boards. Azalea Miller dished out a team high four assists.
Hayley Walkowski and Nicole Buckingham each contributed 14 points for the Blue Devils. Rachel Price grabbed nine rebounds and finished with seven blocks. Walkowski also led LTU in assists with four.
This loss will conclude the Saints 2017-18 season. Siena Heights finished with an 18-12 overall record.
