The Siena Heights women's basketball team will enters winter break this week as they take on Madonna in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest on Saturday, Dec. 16. Next week, the Saints will host Defiance in a non-conference match-up on Monday, Dec. 18 then head to Governors State (Ill.) on Wednesday, Dec. 20, and then finish off the week at home against Alma on Friday, Dec. 22. SHU will tip off against Madonna at 5:30 p.m. while the contests against Defiance, Governors State and Alma will begin at 6 p.m.
Siena Heights is currently 5-7 overall and 3-4 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play. Last week the Saints split their two contests as they defeated Northwestern Ohio, and then fell to No. 24 Lawrence Tech. As a team SHU averaged 60.8 points per game and is shooting 35.8% from the floor, 25.1% from three and 63.2% from the free throw line.
Madonna is 6-6 overall with a 3-3 WHAC record entering it's contest against SHU. Last time the Saints and Crusaders met was in the 2016-17 (Feb. 4) where SHU defeated MU, 95-91. The Crusaders as a team are averaging 70.9 points per game and shooting 40.8% from the field. From the three point line MU is connecting on 31.4% and 71.6% from the charity stripe.
Overall, Defiance is 2-5 on the season. The Yellow Jackets average 61.1 points per contest and from the floor, are shooting 37.3%. From three point land, DC is shooting 34% and 73% from the free throw line.
Governors State is 3-9 and has lost its last eight contests entering this week. The Jaguars average 58 points per game and shoot 36.7% from the floor, 32.4% from three and 60.5% from the charity stripe. Last time GSU and SHU met was on Dec. 21, 2015 in the Roosevelt Holiday Tournament. The Saints won the contest 54-52.
Alma holds an 0-6 overall record. Last time the Scots and Saints met was on Jan. 18, 2016 as AC grabbed the victory, 66-61. This season, Alma has averaged 61.5 points per game and from the field has shot 41.7%, 29.9% from three and 66.3% from the free throw line.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
The Saints are led offensively by Alyssa Larson and Demi Russell, averaging 9.8 and 9.7 points per game respectively. Larson holds a team high field goal percentage of 54.4% from the floor. Sharmaine Wills is the Siena Heights leader on the glass averaging 7.4 rebounds per game, followed by Larson with 6.4. Azalea Miller has dished out 3.0 assists per game while Larson has denied an average of one shot per game.
Becca Sabol leads Madonna with 15.8 points per game, 9.9 rebounds per game and 1.5 blocks per game. Averaging a team high, three assists per contest is Cris Harper.
Lauren Rogers holds a team high, 12 points per game, followed closely by Shelby Stamm with 11 per contest. Also averaging double figures for the Yellow Jackets is Sam Ervin with 10.1. Ervin leads the squad with 8.4 rebounds per game. Whitney Schalk has contributed 4.9 assists per contest.
Governors State has five players averaging double figure scoring. The Jaguars are led by Amber Brooks with 13.8 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game. Tyisha Worthy has led GSU with 3.0 assists per game so far on the season.
Alma is led by Madeline Barnauskas averaging 14.5 points per game. Chloee King and Madison Hill add 10.8 and 10.2 points per contest for the Scots. Emily Long has led AC in rebounds so far this season with 6.8 rpg. Hill leads the Scots with 4.2 assists per game.
The Siena Heights women's basketball team will host Indiana University-Kokomo on Friday, Dec. 29 in its final contest of 2017. The game is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
