Second-Half Run Helps #19 SHU Women Put Away Lawrence Tech

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The 19th-ranked Siena Heights women basketball team opened the second half with a 15-0 run and cruised to a 74-38 victory over Lawrence Tech in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday. The Saints have won 13 of their last 14 games.

Sierra Calhoun scored 14 points while three other Siena Heights scorers also reached double-figures. Morgan Warfield added 11 points while Grace Howrigon and Mackenzie Tomasik contributed 10 points apiece for the Saints (18-6, 11-5), who scored the game's first nine points en route to an early 20-4 lead.

Howrigon also had eight assists while she and Alexxis Knannlein both added six rebounds for the Saints.

The Saints were up 20-4 with 13:38 left in the first half before the Blue Devils (8-12, 6-10)  made a run of their own to cut their deficit to 31-20 at halftime.

From there, the Saints opened the second half with a 15-0 run, building a 46-20 lead, and never looked back. The 15-point streak – led by four points each from Calhoun, Jennifer Jasinski and Tomasik – was the beginning of a stretch in which the Saints outscored Lawrence Tech, 33-8. The Blue Devils' first points of the half didn't come until the 14:36 mark.

With 7:43 remaining in the contest, Siena Heights held a 64-28 advantage. SHU led by as many as 37 at one point.

The Saints finished 29 of 55 from the field (52.7 percent), including 7 of 15 from 3-point land (46.7 percent). Defensively, they stymied the host Devils, limiting LT to an 11-for-67 performance from the field (16.4 percent) and 2-for-17 outing from 3-point distance (11.8 percent).

Hali Butler was the Devils' top performer, finishing with 11 points and eight rebounds. Maegan Branham added seven rebounds for Lawrence.

Siena Heights will be in action next on Wednesday when WHAC opponent Lourdes (Ohio) visits the SHU Fieldhouse for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
