WHAC Preseason Poll Release
The Siena Heights softball team was picked to finish fifth in the 2020 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Preseason Coaches Poll that was released by the league office on Tuesday. The Saints finished third in the WHAC standings a year ago with a 16-6 mark in conference play. The Saints won the WHAC tournament and received a berth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) tournament where they were placed in the Marion, Indiana bracket hosted by Indiana Wesleyan.
The preseason poll is voted on by the coaches in the league who rank the teams in the league from 1-12. 12 points are given to the team at the top of the list, 11 points to the second-ranked team, and so on to determine the order of the poll.
The defending regular-season champion, Madonna, received five first-place votes to finish atop the poll with 136 points. Lawrence Tech finished with five first-place votes and 128 points for the second spot. Aquinas was third with 119 points while also being given a first-place vote. Northwestern Ohio had the final first-place vote to total 112 points to claim the fourth position in the poll. The 2019 WHAC tournament champion, Siena Heights, finished with 89 points for fifth place. Indiana Tech (79 points) and Concordia (Mich.) (74 points) claimed the sixth and seventh spots. Cleary finished with 69 points for eighth while UM-Dearborn earned 53 points for ninth. Lourdes (28 points), Rochester (27), and Cornerstone (22) rounded out the poll.
The Saints begin the 2020 season over Spring Break in Florida on February 28. Siena Heights will play Mount Vernon Nazarene at 10:00 a.m., and Saint Thomas (Fla.) at 12:15 p.m.
